Shotokan Exercise Transferring Between Five Stances
This is a good stance shifting exercise, using 5 basic stances and leg driving. Neko ashi dachi, Sanchin dachi, Hangetsu dachi, zenkutsu dachi and fudo dachi. I know lot's of people have their front foot straight forward in Hangetsu dachi, i turn mine in slightly. Clip taken from one of our live zoom classes.
- Gedan barai in neko ashi dachi
- Ura zuki in sanchin dachi.
- Jun zuki in hangetsu dachi.
- Gyaku zuki in zenkutsu dachi.
- Gedan barai in fudo dachi.
- Gyaku zuki in zenkutsu dachi.
At each point of this shotokan exercise be sure and drive from the legs. Make sure your body weight is in the right position for each shotokan stance. Weight back on 1. neko ashi dachi, weight center for 2. sanchin dachi, weight center for 3. hangetsu dachi, weight forward for 4. zenkutsu dachi, weight forward for 5. fudo dachi and weight forward for 6. zenkutsu dachi.
Mastering the different stances is essential in shotokan karate, spend time on each stance stationary, then move on to combinations like this one here and here’s another example of a great stance shifting exercise.
