Move 2

There are a few different ways to do this kakiwake uke after the first move in Jion. When I step with my left leg, I’ve always had my left arm in front. So left leg in front, left arm in front, the right arms on the inside. Some other people do it the other way round, but I’ve always done left leg, left arm, I don’t think it matters either way really.

So from here, as I step, the first thing I do is put my body weight onto my right leg. As I look 45 degrees, my body weight goes onto my right leg and now I’m in control of my left leg. So as I step, I smoothly step and settle into front stance kakiwake uke. As my hip comes around, my body comes around and I settle into zenkutsu dachi.

Now, this kakiwake block is not like the heian yondan kakiwake uke, in Heian yondan we make a V shape with the block. In Jion the arms are straight so like the uchi uke arm position, with the palms of the fists facing down. There’s no V shape in Jion.

Try not to let the left leg stop at the halfway point, slowly step continuously.

On these slow steps to 45 degree angles, keep zanshin (awareness) it’s not just a slow step, you must have feeling in the movement.

From the first move in Jion, slowly transfer the weight to the right leg as you start to step with the left leg, then slowly settle into kakiwake uke in zenkutsu dachi, facing 45 degrees in front to your left.

Moves 3 to 6
Mae Geri Sanbon Zuki

Kick mae geri with the right leg and step forward sanbon zuki. After the kick keep the arms still in kakiwake uke, then just extend the right arm forward for the oi zuki when you land. A big mistake karateka make with Jion, is their arms fly around everywhere as they kick.

Mae geri chudan, so front kick to the body followed by three punches to the body, with a timing on the punches of 1….2,3 then pause after the sanbon zuki. After the front kick, land square and try and use the hips for the three punches. just before i complete the first punch my left hip is out slightly, then comes square for the first punch, then relax the left hip back slightly before you drive with a left gyaku zuki, then relax the left hip back slightly again, before you drive the third right jun zuki punch.

Move 7

This is a repeat of the second move but stepping with the right leg 45 degrees forward to your right this time.

As I step with the right leg, once again i want to transfer my body weight, this time to my left leg. As I look 45 degrees, my body weight goes onto my leftt leg and now I’m in control of my right stepping leg. So as I step, I smoothly step and settle into front stance kakiwake uke. As my hip comes around, my body comes around and I settle into zenkutsu dachi.

On both of the slow kakiwake uke moves, you can either come all the way back feet together or part way back, so it doesn’t matter which one you do, you just need to transfer with control and slowly.

Moves 8 to 11

This is where we repeat jion moves 3 to 6 but on the opposite side. Kick mae geri with the left leg and step forward sanbon zuki. After the kick keep the arms still in kakiwake uke, then just extend the left arm forward for the oi zuki when you land.

Mae geri chudan, front kick to the body followed by three punches to the body, with a timing on the punches of 1….2,3 then pause after the sanbon zuki. After the front kick, land square and try and use the hips for the three punches. just before I complete the first punch my right hip is out slightly, then comes square for the first punch, then relax the right hip back slightly before you drive with a right gyaku zuki, then relax the right hip back slightly again, before you drive the third left jun zuki punch.
