Who This Is For?
Karate isn't one-size-fits-all, and neither is our dojo.
Just starting out? Our full Beginner to Black Belt & Beyond curriculum takes you from your very first stance through to Dan grade, at whatever pace suits you.
Coming back to it later in life, or starting for the first time at 45+? Our Enso Karate Dojo adapts traditional Shotokan into joint-friendly, high-tension training built around kata, flow, and long-term health and well-being, designed for karateka training later in life, though members of any age are welcome to train there too.
Whichever describes you, you're training the same curriculum, under the same instructors, with the same path to an official black belt.

Sensei Linden Huckle, 7th Dan 50+ years of martial arts experience and 40+ years teaching. UK Chief Instructor of the Zanshin Black Belt Academy and founder of Shotokan Karate Online.
Sensei Stuart Amos, 5th Dan 25+ years of experience and 20 years teaching. Former HDKI World Champion and Chief Instructor of Randori Shotokan Karate Club.
Together, they've built a curriculum that takes the discipline of a traditional dojo and makes it work on your schedule, whether that's a laptop after the kids are in bed or a phone screen at 6am before work.
"I crafted my trade the hard way... I have made thousands of mistakes. I made the mistakes so you don't have to." Sensei Linden Huckle

The Enso Rank Animals. A Living Philosophy of Progress
Long before belts had colours, the old masters looked to nature to explain what mastery actually feels like, because the natural world had already worked it out. A tortoise does not rush its longevity. A tiger does not apologise for its power.
Every animal on earth embodies a single truth about strength, patience, or grace, refined over millions of years with nothing wasted. When we built the Enso ranking system, we didn't want a row of coloured belts that meant nothing beyond "next." We wanted every grade you earn to carry a spirit, a living archetype you could actually feel yourself becoming as you trained.
That's why each of our seventeen ranks, from your very first rank to the summit of 7th Dan, is paired with an animal whose nature mirrors the exact quality you are being asked to develop at that stage of your journey.

The Kyu ranks
Your ten grades from white through brown, trace the same arc every serious student walks, whether they know it or not.
You begin as the Stag Beetle, armoured, grounded, simply learning to stand. From there you awaken the Frog's coiled, explosive potential, then settle into the Tortoise's unhurried endurance, because power without patience burns out fast.
The Crane teaches you balance on a single point of contact, the Praying Mantis teaches you that precision beats speed, the Snake dissolves your rigidity into flow.
By the time you reach the Bear, the Scorpion, the Eagle, and finally the Rhinoceros at the threshold of black belt, you're not just performing techniques from memory, you're moving with the grounded, forward, unstoppable momentum of Shin-Gi-Tai, mind, technique, and body finally speaking as one voice.
Every animal you pass through is a lesson your body keeps long after the test is over.
The Dan ranks
Crossing into the Dan grades doesn't mean you've arrived, the old teachers were clear that Shodan, 1st Dan, is not a finish line but a beginning, and our animals shift accordingly, from creatures of the earth to creatures of myth and sky.
The Tiger of 1st Dan carries raw, primal mastery, the White Crane of 2nd Dan trades force for the soft, expansive power of Yin and Yang, the Cobra of 3rd Dan sharpens your awareness until reaction and intention become the same instant.
By 4th Dan you've become the Kitsune, adaptable, strategic, no longer bound to rigid form and by 5th Dan you rise as the Phoenix, proof that decades of training don't diminish a martial artist, they simply burn away everything unnecessary and leave the essential behind.
The Griffin of 6th Dan guards tradition while shaping the next generation, and the Dragon of 7th Dan represents what every one of these animals was quietly pointing toward all along, the complete, effortless union of a lifetime's practice.
And that, in the end, is the real reason we called this dojo Enso. The ensō, the single brushstroke circle of Zen calligraphy is drawn in one breath, deliberately imperfect, and never fully closed, because it represents a journey without a final destination, elegance, the universe, and the endless nature of true mastery all at once.
Every animal on this ladder is a chapter in that same unbroken circle, not a finish line to cross and forget. Whether you are lacing up your gi for the very first time at fifty, or you are three decades into a discipline you never stopped loving, the mat doesn't ask how old you are or how long it's been, it only asks that you show up and take the next step. Somewhere between the Stag Beetle's patient armour and the Dragon's boundless ascent is exactly where you belong right now. Start there. Oss!
