Shotokan Kihon Combination
In this 45 minute shotokan kihon class, Sensei Amos works on four basic blocks and reverse punch. Working on shomen, hanmi and kime.
Starting with a single block and reverse punch, then two blocks and a reverse punch, then three blocks and a reverse punch, then finally four basic blocks and a reverse punch.
Shotokan Kihon Combination
Starting from shizentai (natural stance)
- Stepping forward with the left leg into zenkutsu dachi (front stance) and block age uke with the left arm, then immediately punch gyaku zuki with the right arm, making sure the body is in the hanmi (side facing) position for the block, then in the shomen (square) position for the gyaku zuki.
- Bring the left leg back to yoi and repeat on the right side.
- Stepping forward with the left leg into zenkutsu dachi (front stance) and block age uke with the left arm, then with the same arm, block soto ude uke (outside forearm block), then immediately punch gyaku zuki with the right arm, making sure the body is in the hanmi (side facing) position for the blocks, then in the shomen (square) position for the gyaku zuki.
- Bring the left leg back to yoi and repeat on the right side.
- Stepping forward with the left leg into zenkutsu dachi (front stance) and block age uke with the left arm, then with the same arm, block soto ude uke (outside forearm block), then again with the same arm, block uchi ude uke (inside forearm block), then immediately punch gyaku zuki with the right arm, making sure the body is in the hanmi (side facing) position for the blocks, then in the shomen (square) position for the gyaku zuki.
- Bring the left leg back to yoi and repeat on the right side.
- For the fourth time, step forward with the left leg into zenkutsu dachi (front stance) and block age uke with the left arm, then with the same arm, block soto ude uke (outside forearm block), then again with the same arm, block uchi ude uke (inside forearm block), then with the same arm again, block gedan barai (downward block), then immediately punch gyaku zuki with the right arm, making sure the body is in the hanmi (side facing) position for the blocks, then in the shomen (square) position for the gyaku zuki.
- Bring the left leg back to yoi and repeat on the right side.
With this shotokan kihon combination, after each completed block, bring the body into the shomen position as you prepare to execute the next block. Try and get a sharp stop at the end of each technique.
