Shotokan Karate Brown Belt Basics

This is one of our brown belt combinations. Within our Dojo, this shotokan combination is first practiced at brown belt and is used when testing from 2nd Kyu to 1st Kyu,

1. From a left side gedan barai, rotate the body into the shomen position whilst preparing the right arm for a left side age empi uchi (upper rising elbow strike)
2. Strike age empi uchi (upper rising elbow strike) with the lefy arm and bring the body into the hanmi (side facing) position.
3. Next drive off the back leg, rotate the body into the shomen (square facing) position and strike mawashi empi uchi chudan (round elbow strike to the body).
4. Prepare the left arm on the right shoulder with the palm facing the neck, then strike a left side shuto uchi jodan (knife hand strike to the head) and finish in the hanmi (side facing) position.
5. Prepare the right hand high with the palm facing away from you, then strike a right side shuto uchi jodan (knife hand strike to the head) finish in the shomen (square facing) position.
6. Next strike a left side teisho uchi jodan (palm heel strike to the head) and finish in the hanmi (side facing) position.
7. Lastly strike a right side teisho uchi chudan (palm heel strike to the body) and finish in the shomen (square facing) position.
8. Repeat on the other side.

Try and keep the same height throughout the combination and try to keep the head still and facing straight forward throughout the combination.

Timing when performed fast should be a quick 1,2, slight pause, them a quick 1,2, slight pause, them a final quick 1,2.

For our brown belt examination we require 2 sets on each leg slowly and 2 sets on each leg fast.
