Enpi Step By Step Tutorial Moves 39 to 46

In this live Enpi step by step tutorial zoom recording, Amos Sensei goes through moves 39 To 46 in detail. The Shotokan karate Enpi kata is a brown kata in many Shotokan Karate Dojo.

In the first part of the kata class, karate kata moves 1 to 38 are practiced and quickly reviewed, then Sensei moves on with the last section of Enpi, moves 39 to 46 in detail.

Enpi Step By Step Tutorial Move 39

Move 39 in Enpi is a slow controlled move, where there are numerous different variations practiced from shotokan Dojo to Dojo.

From a left side gedanbarai (move 38). Slowly drop the right arm down and form the taisho uchi (palm heel strike) position with the hand and wrist.

Then look 45 degrees to the front left and slowly lift the taisho strike up and forwards at a 45 degree angle.

Finishing the taisho at shoulder height approximately with the body in the position of Gyaku hanmi (reverse side on).

Make sure the inner thighs on both legs are tight and squeezed inwards without letting the front knee collapse inwards.

Enpi Kata Step By Step Move 40

These next three moves are very charactoristic of Enpi, some karateka keep the body square as they step, others push one side more forward as they step, then settle into shomen on completion of the move.

Once again there a few diferent ways to do move 40 in Enpi.

Step up to the right leg with the left leg. Keep the same height as you step lifting the left hand high (just above shoulder height), at the same time drop the right hand down, both palms facing eachother.

Step forward with the right leg into zenkutsu dachi, whilst at the same time dropping the left arm into a gedan taisho uchi and lifting the right arm into a taisho uchi at shoulder height.

Arms and stance should complete at the same time. This step should finish in the shomen (square facing) position and the two taisho uchi are in a similar position to the arms on the first move of the kata jion.

Enpi Kata Step By Step Tutorial Move 41

Move 40 is now repeated on the opposite side.

Step forward with the left leg into zenkutsu dachi, whilst at the same time reversing the arms, so the left arm does a taisho uchi at shoulder height and the right arm into a taisho uchi to gedan.

Step smoothly, keeping the same height throughout the step and finishing everything at the same time, the legs finish the front stance as the arms complete the taisho strikes in the shomen (square facing) position.

Move 42

Once again we repeat move 40.

Step forward with the right leg into zenkutsu dachi, whilst at the same time reversing the arms, so the right arm does a taisho uchi at shoulder height and the leftt arm into a taisho uchi to gedan.

Step smoothly, keeping the same height throughout the step and finishing everything at the same time, the legs finish the front stance as the arms complete the taisho strikes in the shomen (square facing) position.

Move 43

Once again there are a few different variations with move 43.

The way we are going to do this is pull the right arm back to the shoulder, then execute a right sided gedan barai, whilst at the same time driving forward using yori ashi and finishing in kokutsu dachi (back stance).

When you drive forward keep on the centre line, which means the right leg comes inside slightly and so does the back left leg, as the feet are in a straight line for kokutsu dachi.

Try and complete the yori ashi and gedan barai at the same time.

Move 44

Pull the right gedan barai arm back to the top of the left hikite arm, then drive forward into fudo dachi using yori ashi and grab Tsukami (grab and pull), with both arms.

The right tsukami is a grab to underneath your opponents inner thigh, the left tsukami is a grab to the throat.

Some Shotokan Karate associations like the SKI, perform this move in kiba dachi.

Move 45 KIAI

The next move is very difficult and if you cannot jump, it’s fine to walk the technique around, as the application is a throw and many karateka do not understand why the throw is even there.

From the double tsukami drive the right knee up and counter clockwise, at the same time vigorously use the right arm to come into the shuto preperation position on top of the left shoulder and jump off of the left leg.

You should be moving up and back, whilst the body rotates counter clockwise.

Lift both knees high and try and tuck them in.

Land both feet together and at the same time block shuto uke in kokutsu dachi.

Kiai from the top of the jump down.

Move 46

After the jump, make sure you hold and stop on the shuto uke in kokutsu dachi, then sharply step back with the left leg into a right side shuto uke in kokutsu dachi.
