9 Strikes 3 Steps Shomen Hanmi Combination. Shodan Basics

This is one of our brown belt combinations. Within our Dojo, this shotokan combination is first practiced at brown belt and is used when testing from 1st Kyu to 1st Dan (black belt).

1. From a left side gedan barai, step forward with a right  side age empi uchi (upper rising elbow strike).
2. Next drive off the back left leg, rotate the body into the shomen (square facing) position and strike a left side mawashi empi uchi chudan (round elbow strike to the body).
3. Strike age empi uchi (upper rising elbow strike) with the left arm and bring the body into the hanmi (side facing) position.
4.  Next step forward with a left leg and strike with a left shuto uchi jodan (knife hand strike to the head).
5. Drive off the back leg, rotate the body into the shomen (square facing) position and strike with a right shuto uchi jodan (knife hand strike to the head).
6. Prepare the left arm on the right shoulder with the palm facing the neck, then strike a left side shuto uchi jodan (knife hand strike to the head) and finish in the hanmi (side facing) position.
7. Next step forward with the right leg and strike with a right teisho uchi jodan (palm heel strike to the head) in the hanmi position.
8. Drive off the back left leg, rotate the body into the shomen (square facing) position and strike with a left teisho uchi chudan (palm heel strike to the body).
9. Lastly strike with a right side teisho uchi chudan (palm heel strike to the body) and finish in the hanmi (side facing) position.
10. Repeat on the other side.

Try and keep the same height throughout the combination and try to keep the head still and facing straight forward throughout the stepping combination.

Timing when performed fast should be a quick 1,2,3 slight pause, them step and a quick 1,2,3 slight pause, then a final quick 1,2.3,

For our black belt examination we require 2 sets on each leg full speed.
